Project Hail Mary Has Made $301 Million, Here Is When It Comes to Prime Video
Project Hail Mary is 12 days old and has already made $301 million worldwide. No official streaming date has been confirmed yet but based on Amazon MGM's release patterns, here is when you can realistically expect to watch it at home.

# Project Hail Mary Has Made $301 Million, Here Is When It Comes to Prime Video
Project Hail Mary came out on March 20 and twelve days in it has already made $301 million at the box office. It opened to $141 million in its first weekend worldwide, which made it one of the biggest non-franchise, non-sequel opening weekends in years. Ryan Gosling's biggest domestic opening as a lead actor.
No official streaming date has been announced. Amazon MGM has not said a word about when it hits Prime Video. But based on how the studio handles its big releases, here is a realistic picture of what to expect.
When Can You Rent or Buy It Digitally
This is the first step and it will happen before it lands on Prime Video for free.
Amazon MGM typically releases its theatrical films on digital rental platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home around 45 days after the cinema release. That would put a digital rental window around early to mid May 2026.
However, the film is still performing strongly at the box office so Amazon may push that window back slightly to keep people in cinemas. A late May digital release feels more likely given how the numbers are looking.
When Will It Stream Free on Prime Video
This is where the wait gets longer. Based on how Amazon MGM has handled its bigger hits, the gap between cinema release and free Prime Video streaming can be anywhere from 90 days to over 150 days.
Films like Blink Twice and Challengers took over 150 days to reach Prime Video. A Working Man took 159 days. These were all box office successes and Amazon deliberately kept them off streaming to protect the theatrical run.
Project Hail Mary is performing better than all of those. Based on the patterns, the most likely window for free Prime Video streaming is August or September 2026. Some estimates point to late August as the most probable landing spot.
What About MGM Plus
Amazon typically releases its films on MGM Plus before they arrive on Prime Video. If you have an MGM Plus subscription, you may be able to watch it there first, potentially as early as June 2026 around the 90 day mark. After that it would move to Prime Video for all subscribers.
Can You Watch It in Cinemas Right Now
Yes. Project Hail Mary is still in cinemas and worth seeing on a big screen. The space sequences and the practical puppet work on Rocky in particular are built for a large format. It currently sits at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and word of mouth has been strong enough to keep it performing well into its second weekend.
What Is It Actually About
Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship with no memory of how he got there. As his memory returns he realises he is the sole survivor of a three-person crew on a one-way mission to save Earth. The Sun is dying and he has to figure out why before it is too late.
The part people keep talking about is Rocky, an alien he encounters during the mission. Rocky is a practical puppet built by Neal Scanlan, the same creature designer behind Star Wars, and performed on set by James Ortiz for every scene with Gosling. The friendship between the two characters is what most reviews focus on and what most people come out of the cinema talking about.
