Spider-Man Brand New Day Is Secretly an X-Men Movie and the Trailer Proves It
Peter Parker is growing organic web shooters, Sadie Sink is almost certainly Jean Grey, and the multiverse cracking open after No Way Home seems to be how Marvel is sneaking mutants into the MCU through a Spider-Man film.
Countdown to Spiderman Brand New Day
The trailer shows Peter going through a biological transformation involving a cocoon, which comic readers will recognise immediately as a nod to a storyline called The Other. He comes out of it with organic web shooters, meaning his body is just producing webs now without any Stark technology involved.
A scan shown on screen classifies him as a Class B enhanced operative with Class A heightened senses. Bruce Banner is there discussing Peter's mutating DNA, and the film is careful to call him a mutate rather than a mutant. The difference matters because it is clearly setting something up.
Nobody has confirmed this officially but the trailer makes it fairly obvious. Her character is shown using telepathy to control guards, she is being held in a Damage Control containment facility, and there is strong evidence she read Peter's mind at some point to learn he is Spider-Man.
There is also a chalkboard in the background of one shot covered in quantum physics equations that tie directly to multiverse theory. The suggestion is that the spell Doctor Strange cast at the end of No Way Home did not just bring in villains from other universes. It cracked the walls between realities open wide enough for mutants to start coming through.
That is how Marvel is doing it. Not a big announcement. Just a Spider-Man film where Jean Grey is quietly being held prisoner by a government agency.
Damage Control has been in the MCU before as the organisation that cleans up after superhero incidents. Here they appear to have expanded their role significantly. They are holding Jean Grey in a specialised cell, which positions them as a government body that detains people with abilities it considers dangerous.
That framing makes them far more interesting than a typical villain.
Jon Bernthal is back as Frank Castle and the tension between him and Peter is not going to be resolved with a handshake. Both of them are going after Scorpion and Boomerang, who appear to be working for Tombstone. The Punisher wants to kill them. Spider-Man does not work that way. That conflict is going to run through the whole film.
Several action shots, particularly the ones involving Hand ninjas, have visible gaps where something has been digitally removed. The most likely explanation is that Daredevil or Hulk appear in those scenes and Marvel is not ready to show them yet. It has done this before.
